As vertical flight technology evolves, facility design has to evolve with it. From traditional helicopters to emerging VTOL aircraft, the right landing facility depends on more than the aircraft itself. Explore the key design, safety, lighting, power, and infrastructure considerations to keep in mind when planning a helipad, vertipad, or facility that may need to support both.

Helipads, heliports, and helidecks all support helicopter operations—but they’re not the same thing. Learn the key differences between these landing facilities, where each is typically used, what features they may include, and how to determine which solution is right for your site.

Learn how aluminum helipad retrofits can upgrade aging concrete helipads with lightweight, durable systems that improve safety, reduce maintenance, lower lifecycle costs, and extend the life of your heliport.

Compare rooftop and ground helipads to understand their differences in design, construction, costs, safety, and accessibility so you can choose the right heliport for your facility or project.

July is shaping up to be a busy month for the FEC Heliports team, and we’re excited to head to Ft. Lauderdale for APSCON 2026. This event is a great opportunity to connect with public safety aviation professionals, share ideas, and discuss heliport solutions designed for real-world performance.

At FEC Heliports, we believe a well-designed helideck (otherwise known as a helipad or helicopter landing pad) is only as reliable as the maintenance behind it. Whether it’s a hospital rooftop, a private facility, a parking garage, or a commercial heliport, regular upkeep plays a critical role in safety.

In today’s cities, traffic congestion is a growing concern and the need for sustainable transport solutions is increasing. Enter VTOL aircraft—the next big thing in urban air mobility. Learn more in our intro to vertiports blog.
